JERUSALEM, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Israeli researchers developed a multipurpose robot with complex and diverse spatial maneuvering capabilities, the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) said in a statement on Wednesday.

The new robot may be used in non-invasive surgeries, firefighting, supplying oxygen to people trapped under rubble, and more, the Technion noted.

The unique development, described in the journal Advanced Materials Technologies, is a specific realization in the field of growing materials -- structures that could expand as needed so that their front part reaches the desired destination.

The robot, which has several stability modes, resembles a long and flexible straw made of many cells and joints.

The straw which grows according to the desired spatial outline can deliver required materials to the destination, fitting through small openings, dealing with friction, and moving flexibly in complex environments.

In experiments, the team demonstrated that the robot is effective in extinguishing fires and performing surgeries on the left ventricle of the heart.
