Israeli troops shot dead 2 in West Bank raid

JERUSALEM, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Israeli troops shot dead two young Palestinian men during a raid in the occupied West Bank on Monday, Israeli and Palestinian sources said.

The two were killed while allegedly attempting to "carry out a ramming attack" towards the soldiers who were raiding the Jalazone refugee camp, north of the city of Ramallah to apprehend a person suspected of "terror activity," the Israeli military said in a statement.

The soldiers "responded with fire and neutralized the suspects," the army said, a term Israel frequently uses to describe the killing of Palestinians suspected of perpetrating attacks.

No injuries have been reported among the Israeli forces.

The official Palestinian news agency of WAFA identified the casualties as Basel Basbous, 19, and Khaled Anbar, 22, both residents of Jalazone. Rafat Salameh, 19, from Birzeit town was injured in the shooting.

Israel's Ha'aretz newspaper cited eyewitnesses saying that the three were shot while in their car on their way back home from their delivery job. They were shot dozens of times.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned the killing in a statement as "a war crime" and to be added to "the list of extra-judicial executions" of Palestinians by Israeli soldiers.

The incident was the latest in six-month-long Israeli raids in the occupied West Bank following a series of street attacks in Israel. The night raids often trigger clashes and cost the lives of dozens of Palestinians.

Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war and controlled it ever since, despite the Palestinian struggle to end the occupation.
