WASHINGTON -- The U.S. S&P 500 closed at its lowest point this year on Tuesday, as U.S. Federal Reserve officials indicated they might continue to raise interest rates -- even to the point of triggering a downturn.

The index has fallen nearly 24 percent from a record high on Jan. 3 -- a drop that comes on the heels of last week's indications that the Fed could keep interest rates high through next year. (US-Stock-Rate Hike)

ABUJA -- In a recent operation in the country's northern state of Kaduna, Nigerian troops rescued at least seven people kidnapped by gunmen, an official said on Tuesday.

The troops combed forests between the Birnin-Gwari and Chikun local government areas of the state and had a fierce gunfight with some gunmen, during which many of them fled, leaving behind the captives in their custody, said Samuel Aruwan, the commissioner for internal security and home affairs in Kaduna.
