JERUSALEM, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Israeli security forces thwarted an attempt to smuggle drugs worth 3 million shekels (about 876,910 U.S. dollars) from Egypt, Israel's military said on Monday.

Overnight, military observation soldiers noticed "a number of suspects approaching Israeli territory along the Egyptian border," the military said in a statement.

After conducting searches, the suspects were apprehended by military and police forces, and "drugs that were hidden in a number of places were found," added the military.

The suspects and the confiscated drugs were transferred to the police.

It was the second attempt to smuggle drugs from Egypt into Israel that has been thwarted in June, after drugs worth 2.5 million shekels were confiscated on June 14.

Drug smugglings along the Israeli-Egyptian border dropped from 350 cases in 2019 to 120 in 2021, according to figures issued by the Israeli army, following military and police operations against cross-border trafficking in recent years.
