Negotiation between the parties only way to resolve Mideast conflict says U.S.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says a resolution by the UN Security Council condemning illegal Israeli settlements would not be helpful.

Nor does the secretary see any other forum being able to assist the Middle East peace process moving forward. The only way the conflict will be resolved will be through a "negotiated setttlement," she said. That means an agreement reached by the two parties.

Ms Clinton was being quoted by the newsagency AFP on Thursday. "The only way that there will be a resolution of the conflict through a negotiated settlement," she said.

"Therefore we don't see action at the UN or any other forum as being helpful in bringing about this desired outcome."

The Palestinian Authority, with Lebanon, is seeking a vote on a resolution condemning Israeli settlements.
